Response To The Poor

Thoughts

Recently I was presented with the question of what the proper response should be from Christians when dealing with the poor, specifically when you come across a homeless person who is asking for money.  I personally don’t give them money for two reasons.  1) I honestly don’t usually have cash on me to give away.  We live in a world where people rarely have cash on them.  2) Our society has perpetuated the thought that homeless people will use that money in the wrong way (drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc…) and we are told that it would be best to make donations to local charities or soup kitchens that will use the money responsibly.

But Jesus doesn’t tell us to help those by donating to a large soup kitchen that will in turn help some of the poor.  Jesus calls us to help the poor directly.  Jesus says that anyone who…

Vandalia is music

Vandalia is dance

Vandalia is a way of life

Vandalia is a place

Vandalia was a proposed colony, originating in the land speculations of politically influential Englishmen and prominent Colonial Americans. In 1768 Benjamin Franklin was one of the organizers of the Great Ohio Company, which proposed the creation of Vandalia as the 14th colony. It would have included almost all of present West Virginia, except for the Eastern Panhandle, and much of Kentucky. The name was a gesture to Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, who proudly claimed descent from the Vandals through her birth to German nobility. The plan almost came to fruition in 1772-74, until the deteriorating American political situation made the British government back off.
The word Vandalia is rich in West Virginia heritage, synonomous with the desire for a free government in the mountains. And today, Vandalia is a place every Memorial Day weekend, at the Capitol Complex in Charleston, West Virginia, where the Vandalia Gathering presents traditional music, dance, crafts and food to keep the old ways alive in young minds.

A night without a sunrise.

Things are not getting better. To quote a song by Phil Collins, “There’s no way out of this dark place.” “No ho hope no future.” “I can’t face another day.”  I cannot buy food with ten dollars. This apartment is a slum in a bad neighborhood.  Nobody will do anything to help me. The ones assigned to help me do nothing. My crew cares only for the ones who are treating me this way. Because of the way they are treating me. The wrong they are doing. if I want enough money to eat I’m condemned. If I want to live someplace safe, condemned. my crew is looking a vacation property and will not lift a finger to help me. I can no longer eat everyday. And nobody will look into the way my payee is handling my finances. Oh my God, no!! I was supposed to begin a “therapy” program, where I would be fed one meal a day. But forget that!! The one who was supposed to look into it is lazy!!! I’ve begun to feel like maybe I don’t have a right to eat. Or be safe. Or have soap for a bath or wash my hair. I’m getting very, very, very down on myself. As that Phill Collins song says, I pray someone will come along and take away the pain.” “I can’t see another way.” “I can’t face another day.” “Tell me where, did I go wrong.” “Everyone I loved they’re all gone.”  There’s no shelter from this storm that’s in my life.  This dark pit is extremely deep and dark. Becoming more so. Would people be happy if I wasn’t here anymore? it seems they would.
